1) Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Salient Features

Electrical engineering concerns with the generation, distribution and use of all types of electrical energy. For convenience, electrical engineering is globally divided into heavy current and light current electrical engineering. While the former mainly deals with the generation, distribution, use and control of large amounts of electrical energy used for illumination, metal refining, heating, electrical drives, welding, machinery controls, chemical processes, plating, electrolysis, etc; the latter deals with the electronics, i.e. small amounts of power used in communications and computer systems and for automation in domestic appliances as well as in the various industrial processes. The electrical engineering graduate balances the two and is commonly known as an ‘electrical engineer.

Objective of the Degree Programme

The B.Sc. in electrical engineering degree programme is aimed at meeting the need for professionals with broad based knowledge, skills and understandings in electrical engineering. After successful completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to carry out effective planning, analysis and design, implementation, operation, testing, maintenance and management of various electrical engineering systems and installations.

Entry requirements (Direct Entry)

Applicants are required to have good Principal level passes in Mathematics and Physics. In addition, candidates should at least a have Subsidiary pass in Chemistry at Form VI or a Credit pass in the Form IV Chemistry.

Employment Opportunities for Electrical Engineers

Since electrical engineers are broad based in specialization, job prospects are enormous. They can be employed by all companies dealing with electrical engineering related works to include: electricity utilities companies such as TANESCO and IPTL; telecommunication companies such as TTCL, Vodacom, Celtel, Mobitel; and various manufacturing companies. Electrical engineers may also find work in other public and private businesses as well as in training and research institutes. Self-employment opportunities are high through setting up of private consulting firms to design and maintain various electrical engineering related systems, as well as providing support to major electrical engineering undertakings.

Electrical Power applications are quite numerous in both industries and homes. In industries, electrical power is used for mental refining, heating, electrical drives, welding, machinery controls, chemical processes, planting, electrolysis, illumination, and in various other applications. Modern such industrial processes need to be accurate and efficient to ensure eventual production of goods or services that have high quality at competitive prices. This calls for automation of most of such processes and improvement of the efficiency and economy of electrical power systems. The same requirement is also important in the end products from industries that are intended for homes. In homes one can now find washing machines, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, cookers, kettles, toasters, dryers, etc. being used. Electrical engineers are mainly concerned with the automation of most of these power applications in industries and homes, using microelectronics technology and employing electronics controllers. Improving the efficiency and economy of electrical systems in industries and homes is a challenging area for ‘electrical engineers’
